The bespoke suit from Rosenløwe

Why it is on the list

Gisle Rosenløwe learned the trade as an apprentice and then journeyman under the tailor Bay, took over the Heinesgade workshop from Tobias Enk in 2009, and is a member of Skrædderlauget, the Danish tailors' guild.¹ The street has had bespoke tailors since the 1920s, and he cuts to English rules.² Every bespoke garment is cut and sewn in the workshop itself.³ The jacket is built on a floating canvas of cattle and horse hair, with a hand-rolled lapel, a close shoulder with little padding, a small armhole and working buttonholes sewn by hand; the buttons are British horn.³ Shirts are cut in the British or Italian style, with loose canvas in collar and cuff and mother-of-pearl buttons sewn on by hand.³

It is the wrong choice for someone who needs clothes within the visit: each garment is cut from a pattern made for the wearer and sewn in the workshop, by appointment.³ For ready-made clothes chosen in private, take the Personal Shopper Suite at Illum instead.

How to get it

Write to Gisle Rosenløwe or call the workshop for an appointment; bespoke work is by appointment only.³ The shop is open Monday to Friday 12:00 to 16:30, Wednesday until 18:00, and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00; it is closed on Sunday.⁴ A bespoke jacket is DKK 11,000, trousers DKK 4,000, a waistcoat DKK 4,000, a coat DKK 13,000 and a shirt DKK 4,000, including VAT and without cloth; a full suit is at most DKK 22,000 with cloth and VAT.³ Half of the tailoring charge is paid as a deposit when the order is placed, and payment is in cash, Dankort or MobilePay.³⁴ Alterations take two days, or less for an express fee.⁵

Discretion

The workshop is run by Gisle Rosenløwe, and bespoke customers are seen only by appointment.²³ The shop is a street-level shopfront on Heinesgade near Nørrebros Runddel, and there is usually parking in the street outside.⁴
