The Funen Painters. Art Above All!

Why it is worth going

The exhibition brings together major works by the Sybergs, the Larsens and the Swanes, three couples who were close friends, relatives and fellow painters on Funen, and sets them beside their own letters and archive material.¹ It grew from a research project on the correspondence between the couples, and is a revised version of the 2023 show at Kunstmuseum Brandts, curated by Søren Thorlak Madsen, with a new design by Luise Midtgaard and lighting by Copenhagen Lighting Studio.¹ Loans include Fritz Syberg's 1909 garden picture from Skagens Museum, his 1899 "En kunstnerfamilie" from the Johannes Larsen Museet and Alhed Larsen's "Kejserkroner" of 1910 from Kunstmuseum Brandts.¹ The story runs past the flower pictures to the Swanes' divorce and the early deaths of Anna Syberg and Alhed Larsen, and to how the three women kept painting between domestic duties and daily interruptions.¹ Nivaagaard's Painting Collection shows Christine Swane on her own from 26 September 2026 to 31 January 2027.¹
