Louisiana for Two

A 45-minute private tour for two people with one of Louisiana's art educators, in the museum of modern art on the Sound 35 km north of Copenhagen.

Why it is on the list

Louisiana is a major work of Danish modernist architecture: low pavilions joined by glass corridors, built by Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert from 1958 and extended seven times by the same office, in a park on the cliff above the Sound.1 The collection holds more than 4,000 works; the Giacometti sculptures and the Jorn gallery are almost always on view, with 45 sculptures in the park.2 On Louisiana for Two you have one art educator to yourselves and choose the subject: a current exhibition, the collection, or the house's history and architecture.3

It is the wrong choice for a party larger than two: the ordinary guided tour takes up to 25 people.3

How to get it

Telephone the museum's booking on +45 49 19 07 19, Monday to Thursday 9.00 to 15.00, and ask for Louisiana for Two with your chosen subject. Book well ahead, and no later than Thursday 13.00 in the week before; a cancellation needs at least a week's notice. Tours run Tuesday to Friday from 11.15 to 21.00 and Saturday from 11.15 to 14.00, and last about 45 minutes. The price is DKK 1,200, museum entrance and a glass of wine in the café included.3 The museum is closed on Mondays.4 Trains from Copenhagen Central to Humlebæk take about 40 minutes, then a 10 to 15 minute walk; by car it is 35 km up the motorway or along Strandvejen, and 10 km from Helsingør.5

Discretion

The tour runs in opening hours, so the galleries hold other visitors; the latest slots, Tuesday to Friday up to 21.00, fall in the museum's evening opening until 22.00.34 A car may drop off and collect at the main entrance on Louisevej, and there is free parking outside it.5
