Why it is worth going

The exhibition gathers all nine of Jan van Eyck's known painted portraits, half of the works by him that survive anywhere.¹ They have never hung together before, and the Gallery presents this as the only time they will.¹ The sitters are not royalty but craftsmen, merchants and members of the painter's own family, painted some 600 years ago.¹ The catalogue carries new research on his technique.¹
