The docent-led tour at Lotusland

Why it is on the list

Lotusland is the Montecito estate the opera singer Ganna Walska bought in 1941 and spent the last 43 years of her life planting.¹ The house is by Reginald Johnson, from 1919; George Washington Smith added buildings and the pink walls in the 1920s.² The garden holds about 3,500 kinds of plants, and the cycad collection covers more than half the known species, with three Encephalartos woodii, a cycad no longer found in the wild, around the Cycad Pond.²³ Santa Barbara County caps the visitors and cars allowed each day, so the garden is never crowded.⁴ The docent walks about two miles through the history and the collections and uses the full two hours.⁴

It is the wrong choice between November and mid-February: the 2026 season closes on October 31 and the garden reopens on February 17, 2027.⁴ In those months, take the historic house tour at Sunnylands instead. The Tropical Garden is closed for now while fire mitigation and water work is finished.⁴ Once the docent tour ends there is no time left to walk on your own, because every visit has a fixed exit time.⁵

How to get it

Book online or with the reservations office on 805-969-9990 (Monday to Saturday, visitorservices@lotusland.org), and add the docent to the admission ticket.⁴ Admission is $70 for an adult and $35 for a child aged 3 to 12; the docent costs $15 more.⁴ Visits are at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm, Wednesday to Saturday, and guests leave by 11:30 am or 3:30 pm.⁴ There are no walk-ins, no same-day tickets and no waitlist. Tickets are released a few months at a time; book three to four weeks ahead, and check back for cancellations.⁴⁵ Arrive at 9:15 or 1:15. The gates close 15 minutes after the start time, and late arrivals may be refused with no refund; from Los Angeles, allow for traffic.⁴ A group of up to 35 can book a private Enhanced Tour instead.⁶

Discretion

The visitor entrance is on Cold Spring Road near Sycamore Canyon Road and has no street address; directions come by email with the booking, and the Ashley Road address is for staff and deliveries only.⁴⁵ Each reservation includes one parking ticket, and a rideshare drops off and picks up at the visitor entrance.⁴
