Why it is worth going
Rudolf Buchbinder plays the complete cycle of Beethoven's piano concertos with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, one concerto a programme, across six weeks.1 Gustavo Dudamel conducts the first four: the First, Second and Third on 4, 5 and 6 December, each paired with the Third Symphony, "Eroica".2 On 10 to 13 December he conducts the Fourth Piano Concerto and the Fifth Symphony, the two works Beethoven premiered together in December 1808, the concerto at his last public appearance as a pianist.3 Xian Zhang conducts the close on 14 to 17 January: the Fourth Symphony, then the "Emperor" Concerto.4 Each evening runs about two to two and a half hours with a 20-minute interval.2
