The private architecture tour at the Salk Institute

Why it is on the list

Louis Kahn designed the Salk Institute for Jonas Salk between 1959 and 1965: two laboratory blocks facing each other across a travertine plaza, with a single channel of water running west toward the Pacific.¹ The original buildings were designated a historical landmark in 1991, and the American Institute of Architects gave it the Twenty-five Year Award in 1992.¹ The Institute is a working research campus, and the courtyard can be seen only on a registered docent-led tour; there are no self-guided visits.² The private tour follows the same outdoor route and commentary as the public one, with the docent and the courtyard to your party alone, on a weekday of your choosing.²³

It is the wrong choice for interiors: tours stay outdoors and never enter the laboratories.² It is also the wrong choice for small children or a stroller, since the route has stairs and the tour is designed for adults with an interest in architecture.² For rooms rather than a courtyard, take the historic house tour at Sunnylands.

How to get it

Request the private group tour on the Salk tours site at least 10 business days ahead, with a first and second choice of date and time, Monday to Friday between 9 am and 3 pm.³⁴ The request is not a booking: staff check docent availability, then send the confirmed date, a payment link, a waiver and arrival details, and the tour is booked once payment is received.³ It costs $250 for 1 to 10 people, $500 for 11 to 20 and $750 for 21 to 30; very large groups are split between docents.³² Tours are usually scheduled three months ahead.² The campus closes on weekends, holidays and for private events, and Salk may have to reschedule a tour.³ Cancel by email to tours@salk.edu at least two business days before for a full refund; after that the payment is kept as a donation to the buildings.² Tours run rain or shine, start on time, and a party more than 10 minutes late may not be taken; email tours@salk.edu if you are delayed.²

There is no public parking on campus: paid parking is across the road at the Sanford Consortium, at $4.50 an hour, and ride-share or a taxi is the simpler way in; allow 15 to 20 minutes if you drive.² The Salk Café is open to visitors from 8 am to 3 pm.²

Discretion

Guests check in with Security at the reception entrance in the southern front building, and stay with the docent throughout.²⁵ One hand-held camera or phone each is allowed for casual pictures; tripods, drones, staged or commissioned shoots and any photography of the laboratories are not, and pictures taken on the tour are for personal use only.⁵ Professional filming needs advance approval from Salk's communications team.⁵
