Why it is on the list
Charles and Henry Greene built the house in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of Procter and Gamble, and it is the most complete and original of their work that survives; the City of Pasadena owns it and The Gamble House Conservancy runs it.1 It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1977 and is a California Historical Landmark.2 The rooms are seen only on a guided tour; the private tour is scheduled for your party alone.13 The same office books the longer tours for a group: Behind the Velvet Ropes, two and a half hours with flashlights into spaces the standard tour leaves out; Details & Joinery, three hours with the cabinetmaker Jim Ipekjian; and Fire & Light, two hours on the leaded glass with the glass artist John Hamm.3
It is the wrong choice for more than 12, who take a group tour of 12 to 40 instead, and for anyone who cannot manage stairs: the front entrance has steps, the second floor is 18 stairs up and the attic 17 more, and the stair lift serves the first floor only and no electric wheelchairs.3 For a house of the 1940s rather than the 1900s, take the private interior tour of the Eames House.

Write to the Tour and Education Manager at jenniferm@gamblehouse.org, or call +1 626 793 7419, and ask for a pre-scheduled private tour; the same contact books Behind the Velvet Ropes or another tour type for your group.3 The private one-hour tour costs $240.00 for up to 12 guests.3 The house opens for tours on Tuesdays and Thursday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays.3 Wear flats or heels at least 2 inches wide at the base, or take the booties handed out; leave food, bags larger than 12 by 14 by 5 inches, umbrellas and pets outside.3 Parking is free in the marked spaces on Westmoreland Place, in front of the house.3
Discretion
Still photographs for personal use are allowed without flash, tripods or selfie sticks; drones are not allowed near the house.3 The Conservancy may photograph or film visitors on the property and use the recordings in its archive and publicity.3
