A guided tour of the Pollock-Krasner House

Why it is on the list

Pollock painted Autumn Rhythm, Convergence and Blue Poles in the barn behind the house between 1946 and 1952, with the canvas flat on the floor, walking round it and pouring from all four sides.¹ The paint that ran past the edges is still on the floorboards: a covering laid after 1952 protected it until it was lifted in 1987.¹ After his death in 1956 Krasner moved into the barn and worked there for the rest of her life, and her colours remain on the walls where she tacked her canvases.¹ The house, built in 1879, keeps the furnishings that were there when Krasner died in 1984, among them Pollock's hi-fi, his jazz records, the couple's library and his late-1930s painting Composition with Red Arc and Horses.² The house and studio became a National Historic Landmark in 1994.³

It is the wrong day between November and April, when the house is closed, and for anyone who cannot walk: the ground floor of the house takes a wheelchair, the studio does not.⁴ For an artist's house and studio with a private tour, take the private tour of Olana.

How to get it

Book a place on a guided tour through the reservation page; there is no visit without one.⁴ In 2026 the season runs from 1 May to 31 October, with docent-led tours Thursday to Sunday at noon and 2 pm and a self-guided visit with an audio guide at 4 pm.⁴ For anything the booking page does not cover, write to Theresa E. Davis, assistant to the director, who handles tours and tickets, or call (631) 324-4929.⁵ Anyone who needs the alternative to the studio floor should say so when booking.⁴

The house is at 830 Springs Fireplace Rd in East Hampton.⁵ Park in the house's own lot: parking on the street is not allowed.⁴

Discretion

Visits are by reservation only, at set hours four days a week, so there is no walk-in crowd.⁴ Drones are not allowed on the property.⁴
