Why it is on the list

Storm King has shown large-scale sculpture in the open since 1960, across 500 acres of hills, meadows and forest.¹ The collection runs from Alexander Calder, David Smith, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi, Richard Serra and Louise Nevelson to Andy Goldsworthy and Martin Puryear; five monumental Mark di Suvero pieces stand in the South Fields, and Maya Lin's Storm King Wavefield of 2009 is seven long rows of shaped earth.² Much of the land was reshaped for the works that stand on it, with Schunnemunk Mountain behind.²

Go on a weekday. From September 26 to November 8, 2026, Saturdays and Sundays carry peak pricing, and group bookings are closed on those weekends.³⁴ It is closed on Tuesdays.³ It is the wrong day out in steady rain: the museum opens in any weather, the ground is hills, gravel and mown lawn, and most of the work is outdoors.⁵

How to get it

Buy timed tickets ahead on the tickets page; they include parking and are the only way to be sure of getting in, since tickets on the day can run out.³ A weekday adult ticket is $25, a weekend ticket $28.³ Hours are 10AM to 6PM, last entry 5PM; the Museum Building galleries close at 5PM.³⁵ Drive to the onsite parking at 20 Old Pleasant Hill Rd, New Windsor; by train, Metro-North from Grand Central to Beacon is about 30 minutes from the gate by car, and NJ Transit to Salisbury Mills-Cornwall about 10.⁵ Vehicles larger than a standard space cannot be parked.³ For a party of 12 or more, ask for a group visit at least three weeks ahead; reserved tours and trams run on weekdays only.⁴ Private events go through a request form; call 845.534.3115 or write to info@stormkingartcenter.org.⁶

Discretion

Weekend days in the fall season are the busiest; a weekday avoids them.³ Photographs for personal use are allowed, flash is restricted in the galleries, and professional or commercial shoots need prior approval.⁷⁶ Drones are not allowed.⁷
