Why it is worth going

New York City Ballet was founded in 1948 by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, and this programme is Balanchine alone.12 Pithoprakta, his 1968 ballet to Iannis Xenakis's stochastic score of the same name, returns after a long gap: a corps of twelve and a pas de deux in which the two dancers rarely touch.23 With it come La Sonnambula, to music by Vittorio Rieti, a masked ball and a sleepwalker; The Unanswered Question from Ivesiana, made in 1954 to Charles Ives; and Theme and Variations to Tschaikovsky, Balanchine's homage to the Russian imperial ballet.2 Four performances only, on October 8, 13 and 17.3
