Why it is worth going

Gustavo Dudamel takes up the post of Music and Artistic Director of the New York Philharmonic with the 2026–27 season, the first Latin American named to it.1 He first guest-conducted the orchestra in 2007 and came back 26 times before the appointment.1 This programme pairs Mahler with Tania León, from September 24 to 29.2 The orchestra, founded in 1842, is the oldest of the American "Big Five".3 It plays in the Wu Tsai Theater, the 2,200-seat hall rebuilt in a USD 550 million renovation and reopened in October 2022, with balcony seating wrapped around a stage moved forward into the room.4
