The guided visit to 101 Spring Street

Why it is on the list

Judd bought 101 Spring Street in 1968: five storeys of cast iron on the corner of Mercer Street, built in 1870 to a design by Nicholas Whyte. It was the first building he owned, and his New York home and studio.¹ It is where he first put art in place for good; the 37 works, the furniture and his own collection on floors one to five stand as he arranged them.¹ The building is part of the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, and the foundation opened it to visitors in June 2013 after a restoration that kept Judd's own changes to it.¹

It is the wrong visit for children under 12, who are not admitted, or for anyone who wants photographs: none are allowed.² The visit climbs five historic staircases; there is a lift for those who cannot take them.²

How to get it

Book a time on the foundation's calendar; visits run Tuesday to Saturday, only by advance reservation, and places are limited.² Tickets are $32.50, or $17.50 for students and seniors with ID; they cannot be refunded but can be exchanged if another time is free.² Arrive early: the door opens 15 minutes before the start, and a visit that has begun takes no latecomers.² For a lift, seating or listening devices, write to newyork@juddfoundation.org beforehand.² For an evening in the building rather than a visit, write to events@juddfoundation.org; the foundation holds private events at 101 Spring Street.³ The building closes on the main public holidays, from Christmas Day to New Year's Day, and for two weeks in August.²

Discretion

The entrance is on the Mercer Street side of the building.² A guide stays with visitors throughout; bags, coats and umbrellas are checked, phones go silent, and cameras, smart watches and camera glasses stay off.²
