Zurbarán

Why it is worth going

The last large international exhibition of Zurbarán was the one the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Grand Palais mounted in 1987–1988; this one is organised by the Louvre with the National Gallery, London and the Art Institute of Chicago.¹ It is a selection of his best paintings in seven parts, weighted towards the monumental canvases he painted for Andalusian monasteries, with portraits, still lifes and a room for his son Juan de Zurbarán.¹ Later works show his hold on Manet, Picasso and Juan Gris.¹ It shares its rooms and scenography with Sculpting Colour, on Spanish polychrome sculpture from the Museo Nacional de Escultura in Valladolid, and one ticket covers both.¹ The curator is Charlotte Chastel-Rousseau of the Louvre's Department of Paintings.¹ Around it the Louvre programmes Spanish music: the Cantoría Ensemble on the opening night, 7 October at 8:00 p.m., and Jordi Savall with Hespèrion XXI on 13 January 2027.¹
