Why it is worth going

Pontormo has never had a large exhibition of his own; this is the first, and it brings together all his principal paintings with a large selection of works on paper.¹ Much of it comes from the Uffizi, the show's partner, with loans from the Louvre, the National Gallery, the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Getty.¹ At its centre is the Visitation from the church of San Michele Arcangelo at Carmignano, his best-known altarpiece.¹ Cristina Acidini curates, with Elena Capretti, Philippe Costamagna, Bruce Edelstein and Carlo Falciani; the route runs mostly in chronological order.¹ The rooms are in the former papal stables on the Piazza del Quirinale, completed by Ferdinando Fuga in 1732 and restored for exhibitions to a design by Gae Aulenti.²
