A bespoke suit from Ginza Tailor

A full bespoke suit cut and sewn by hand, start to finish by one craftsman, at the Ginza house that has tailored since 1935.

Why it is on the list

Ginza Tailor has made clothes by hand in Ginza since 1935. It still works in the maru-nui way: one craftsman sews each garment from start to finish.1 Cutting and sewing are done by hand in its own workshop on Namiki-dori.2 Its work has won the Prince Takamatsu technical prize twice, once for suits and once for formal wear, and it has been chosen four times to represent Japan at a world exhibition of fine tailoring.32 It makes for women as well as men.2 It is the wrong choice for a suit needed within days: each takes more than 70 hours of handwork, and the house makes about 300 a year.4

How to get it

Book an appointment with the bespoke form on the reservation page, or call +81 3 3571 4129 when time is short; without one there may be a wait.54 The shop is open 10:00 to 19:00 and closed on Tuesdays and over the New Year.1 Ask for a full bespoke suit with fittings, which starts at JPY 385,000.2 That is made on the fifth floor of the Ginza Tailor Building, 5-5-16 Ginza. Ginza Tailor CLOTHO, on the fourth floor, makes to order without a fitting and has its own number; it is not the one to book.5

The shop is on the fifth floor of the Ginza Tailor Building, not at street level.1
