Why it is worth going
The first staging of the opera at the New National Theatre, in Laurent Pelly's production shared with the Teatro Real in Madrid and the Opéra National de Lyon; Pelly frames it around a heroine absorbed in a photo novel.1 It opened in Madrid in 2023, and Kazushi Ono, the theatre's artistic director of opera, opens the season with it as the first of three new productions.2 Claudia Muschio, Amina in the theatre's La Sonnambula in 2024, sings Fiorilla; Alejandro Baliñas Vieites is Selim, Paolo Bordogna Geronio, Ruzil Gatin Narciso and Bruno Taddia Prosdocimo.1 Alessandro Bonato makes his debut at the house conducting the Tokyo Philharmonic.2 It is sung in Italian with English and Japanese surtitles in the 1,806-seat Opera Palace, whose walls and ceilings are finished in thick oak.2
