The curator's tour of Frederiksborg Castle

Why it is on the list

Frederiksborg is the Renaissance castle Christian IV built on three small islands in the Castle Lake at Hillerød, and it holds the Museum of National History and Denmark's National Portrait Gallery.¹² This tour is given by the museum's own curators and experts, for your group, on the permanent collection or the special exhibitions.³ A 30-minute concert on the Compenius organ of 1610 in the Castle Church can follow, with an introduction to the organ's history and how it works.⁴

The tour runs while the museum is open, every day of the year.¹ To have the grand rooms after closing, the museum arranges events outside opening hours, with special tours, hosts in historical costume and champagne; that is worth it for a company or a large family party.⁵ For a castle seen after closing at a published price, the Secrets of Kronborg tour runs outside opening hours for up to 35 people, at DKK 4,500 plus admission.⁶

How to get it

Write to booking@frederiksborg.dk with the date and time, the subject you want, the number of people and your contact details.³ Ask in the same message for the organ concert if you want it; it can be booked alone or joined to a special tour.⁴ The expert tour runs one hour and costs DKK 5,000.³ The concert costs DKK 2,500 for up to 30 people.⁷ Both are charged on top of museum admission.⁴ Admission is DKK 125 for an adult, DKK 105 each for a group of at least 10, and free under 18; tickets bought online are non-refundable.⁸ The same address books the museum's other private tours: the splendour rooms and highlights, DKK 1,500 for 1 hour or DKK 1,800 for 1.5 hours, for up to 30 people.⁷ There is also a 45-minute tour of the new portrait of King Frederik X in the Great Hall, DKK 1,500 plus admission.⁹ Events outside opening hours are arranged on request, with no published price.⁵ Neither the notice, the largest party for the expert tour nor its cancellation rule is published: ask booking@frederiksborg.dk for all three when you write. Rabarbergaarden Slottet, the museum's restaurant, serves lunch daily from 11.30 (last seating 15.30) and dinner on Friday and Saturday from 17.30 (last seating 20.30), without museum admission.⁷

Discretion

The tour is booked for your group alone, with one of the museum's curators or experts, on the subject you set.³ The organ concert is booked for your party as well.⁴ For the castle with no other visitors, the museum holds events outside opening hours; ask booking@frederiksborg.dk.⁵
