Why it is on the list

Rosenborg keeps the Danish crown jewels, the only crown jewels in the world that are shown in a museum and still worn by the sitting queen.¹ The private tour covers two hundred years, from Christian IV, who built the castle, to Frederik IV, its last royal resident. It passes Christian IV's blood-stained clothes and the speaking tube he used between floors, Frederik III's marble room, Christian V's twelve tapestries in the Great Hall and Frederik IV's glass. It ends in the Treasury, with the crown jewels and Christian IV's Renaissance crown.²

It is the wrong choice for anyone who cannot manage stairs: the castle has no lift, and a wheelchair reaches only the ground floor and the Treasury, with help.³

How to get it

Email the Royal Danish Collection's booking department with the number of guests, the tour and the date you want; a confirmation follows by email.² Ask for the private guided tour Highlights of Rosenborg. It takes about an hour and costs 995 kroner for the guide plus admission per person; up to 25 people is the suggested size, and larger groups can ask for a tour made for them.² Admission is 140 kroner online and 150 kroner at the door, free under 18.³ The castle is open 10.00 to 17.00, and from 2 November to 23 December 10.00 to 16.00, closed on Mondays.⁴

Discretion

The entrance is at Øster Voldgade 4A, 200 metres from Nørreport Station; there is no parking in the castle area or in the street outside the gate. Backpacks are not allowed and handbags must be small and worn in front; lockers are free. Personal photographs with handheld equipment are allowed; tripods, commercial and wedding photography are not. Public visitors come in limited numbers on ten-minute time slots.³
