The private tour of Karen Blixen's home after hours

Why it is on the list

Rungstedlund is the country house on the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen where Karen Blixen was born in 1885 and lived from her return from Kenya in 1931 until her death in 1962; she wrote most of her work there and is buried in the park.1 Her private rooms are kept as she left them, with her parents' furniture and the things she brought home from Africa.2 She wrote most of it in Ewald's Room,1 painted blue-green after the Sound across the road, with Somali and Maasai weapons from Kenya on the wall.3 The museum's guides give the tour to private parties in English, French, German or Danish, on a theme you choose: her life and work, Kenya, daily life at Rungstedlund, Babette's Feast, her reading.4 Most of the park is the bird sanctuary she set up in 1958.14

It is the wrong choice for a party that wants a castle or more than an hour: the tour takes 45 minutes, and the house is a writer's home.5 For the castle, take the Secrets of Kronborg tour after hours; for art, Louisiana for Two.

How to get it

Write to omvisning@blixen.dk with the date, the time, the number in your party, the language and the theme, and ask for a private tour outside normal opening hours.5 The English page gives booking@blixen.dk for the same requests.4 The tour desk answers the phone on +45 27 73 26 10, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 to 12:00 only; email reaches them any day.5 A tour costs DKK 1,000 for up to 20 people, with a DKK 1,000 surcharge outside opening hours, and every guest also needs a museum ticket, DKK 100 for adults and free under 18.56 The museum is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00, so an after-hours tour falls before 11:00 or after closing.6 A one-hour guided walk in the bird sanctuary can be added, DKK 1,250 for up to 20.5

Discretion

Booked outside opening hours, the tour is held when the house is closed to other visitors.56 The garden and bird sanctuary stay open to the public all day.6 Cars use the small free car park to the left of the drive; the Kystbanen coastal train stops at Rungsted Kyst.6
