The Presidential Suite at The Carlyle

Why it is on the list

The Carlyle opened in 1930 on Madison Avenue between 76th and 77th Streets: an Art Deco tower by Sylvan Bien and Harry M. Prince, with interiors by Dorothy Draper. U.S. presidents from Truman to Clinton have stayed there.¹ Of its 34 themed suites, the Presidential Suite is the one that takes the whole 26th floor.¹ The private elevator opens onto a landing with gold leaf and hand-etched Art Deco murals, then a gallery with a piano. The walls are Venetian plaster, and floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides look over Central Park, Midtown and beyond.² There are three bedrooms, four full bathrooms and a half bath, a living room, a media area and a full kitchen with Viking and Miele appliances, a washer and dryer, Toto toilets in every bathroom and twice-daily housekeeping.²

For the park view with fewer rooms, the Central Park Suite comes with one, two or three bedrooms; the Empire Suite is a duplex over two floors with views across the park.³

Call the suite line on +1 212 570 7124 or write to thecarlyle@rosewoodhotels.com and ask for the Presidential Suite on the 26th floor.² The hotel's switchboard is +1 212 744 1600.⁴ One night of room and taxes is due as a deposit at booking. Cancel at least seven days before 3 pm Eastern on the day of arrival, or one night with taxes is charged; the terms can change around city-wide events and holidays.² The hotel's general policy gives 24 hours instead, so confirm in writing which applies to your booking.⁵ The rate is given on request: write to thecarlyle@rosewoodhotels.com for the rate for your dates, how many guests the floor sleeps and how far ahead to book. Rollaway beds are USD 75 a night in the rooms that take them.² Check-in is at 3 pm and check-out at noon.²

Discretion

The suite takes the whole 26th floor, so no other guest shares it, and the private elevator opens onto its own landing.² The hotel's top suites have Suite Ambassador service, and security is on duty 24 hours. The Met Gala red-carpet departures leave from the hotel; expect cameras outside that night.⁶
