The Presidential Suite at The Carlyle

Why it is on the list

The Carlyle opened in 1930 on Madison Avenue between 76th and 77th Streets: an Art Deco tower by Sylvan Bien and Harry M. Prince, with interiors by Dorothy Draper. Every U.S. president from Truman to Clinton stayed there.¹ Of its 34 themed suites, the Presidential Suite is the one that takes a whole floor, the 26th.¹ The private elevator opens onto a landing with gold leaf and hand-etched Art Deco murals, then a gallery with a piano. The walls are Venetian plaster, and floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides look over Central Park, Midtown and beyond.² There are three bedrooms, four full bathrooms and a half bath, a living room, a media area and a full kitchen with Viking and Miele appliances, plus a washer and dryer.²

It is more than two people need. For the park view on two floors, ask for the Empire Suite, a duplex. For one to three bedrooms facing the park without the whole floor, ask for the Central Park Suite.³

How to get it

Call the hotel on +1 212 570 7124 or write to thecarlyle@rosewoodhotels.com and ask for the Presidential Suite on the 26th floor.² One night of room and taxes is due as a deposit at booking. Cancel at least seven days before 3 pm Eastern on the day of arrival, or one night is charged; the terms can change around city-wide events and holidays.² Check-in is at 3 pm and check-out at noon.² The hotel also runs Suite Ambassador service for its top suites.⁴

Discretion

The suite is the only one on its floor, and the private elevator opens onto its own landing.² The hotel tower on 76th Street and the apartment building on 77th Street were built with separate entrances.¹ The hotel entrance is at 35 East 76th Street, with a parking garage beside it.⁵ Security is on duty 24 hours.⁴ On the night of the Met Gala, red-carpet departures leave from the hotel, so expect press outside.⁴
