A bespoke wardrobe from Battistoni

Why it is on the list

Battistoni has cut clothes in the courtyard at Via Condotti 61A since 1946, when Guglielmo Battistoni opened there as a shirtmaker; the house is still at that address.¹² Andy Warhol, Karl Lagerfeld, Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau were clients.³¹ The work is done in the atelier itself, by tailors, cutters and finishers who share the workshop.³ Each client gets a personal pattern that the house keeps, so every later shirt or suit is cut from the same template; each piece is made entirely by hand, set with a long hand-pressing, and afterwards restored and adjusted as the wardrobe ages.³ Anything from a single suit to a full wardrobe can be ordered.³

It is the wrong call for something needed in a day or two: the work runs from a measurement session and sketches through a new pattern to fittings.³ For a suit cut by one named master, Gaetano Aloisio on Via di Porta Pinciana is the other choice.

How to get it

Call the atelier on +39 06 679 6111 or write to concierge@battistoni.com and ask for a private bespoke appointment.² The atelier is at Via dei Condotti 61/A, open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00 and closed on Sunday.² The first meeting is a measurement session in which the garment is designed together through sketches; every detail is settled before the cloth is cut.³ Outside Rome, the master tailor sees clients by appointment at trunk shows abroad; the next are Geneva on 28 September, Los Angeles on 29 September, Dallas on 30 September and Dubai in October.⁴
