Why it is worth going
Kirill Petrenko is chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.1 In Rome he takes the podium of the Santa Cecilia orchestra for three evenings.2 The programme opens with Hindemith's Mathis der Maler symphony, then Benjamin Bernheim sings four Strauss orchestral songs: Verführung, Heimliche Aufforderung, Morgen and Cäcilie.2 Schumann's Third Symphony, the Rhenish, closes it.2 The hall seats 2,800 around a central stage, under a ceiling of 26 shells in American cherry.3
