The private viewing at STPI

Why it is on the list

STPI was founded in 2002, with Singapore government support, around the presses and equipment shipped from Kenneth Tyler's American workshops, among them a 100-tonne hydraulic platen press. Tyler had printed for Frank Stella, Helen Frankenthaler, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.¹ It is a non-profit workshop and gallery in the national Visual Arts Cluster, beside National Gallery Singapore and Singapore Art Museum, and every work it shows starts as a residency in its own workshop.² Past residents include Do Ho Suh, Christian Marclay, Haegue Yang, Tobias Rehberger, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Han Sai Por, and visiting artists can live in apartments on site while they work.³ What a private viewing puts in front of you is made only here: works by Lee Bul, Haegue Yang, Do Ho Suh, Pae White and others, each with its price on request.⁴

It is the wrong choice for a first look at the building and the current show: the gallery is open to all, admission is free, and docents lead free guided tours of the exhibition and the workshop that take drop-in guests.⁵

How to get it

Private viewings go through the sales team.⁵ Write to them through the Get in Touch form on the Plan Your Visit page and choose Artwork Enquiries as the subject.⁵ Jefferson Jong is Assistant Director (Sales).² Works in the collection can be browsed and enquired about one by one on the Collect page before the visit.⁴ The gallery keeps hours Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm, and is closed on Sundays and public holidays.⁵

By car, enter from Mohamed Sultan Road and get out just outside Caseen Street; there is no parking in Caseen Street itself, and the nearest is at UE Square, three minutes away on foot.⁵ Fort Canning MRT, exit A, is about eight minutes' walk.⁵

Discretion

The viewing is arranged privately with the sales team rather than through the public programme.⁵ The building is shared: the same restored warehouse also holds a shop, a cafe and a restaurant, and the gallery is open to the public during its hours, when drop-in guided tours pass through the exhibition and the workshop.⁵
