Why it is worth going

The 2026 edition runs across a record 55 venues: 10 AWT Focus spaces, 13 institutions and 32 galleries.¹ It is organised by Japan Contemporary Art Platform with Art Basel, with support from Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs, and the directors of the Mori Art Museum, the National Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo sit on its organising committee.² The week lines up Mariko Mori at the Mori Art Museum, Philippe Parreno at Taro Nasu, Sterling Ruby at Taka Ishii Gallery, Alicja Kwade at Pace, Nam June Paik at Watari-um and Ann Veronica Janssens at Ginza Maison Hermès Le Forum.³ AWT Focus, its centrepiece, gives 10 curators 10 spaces this year, among them Ekow Eshun at space Un, Jeremy Strick showing Mary Weatherford at Shibunkaku and Martin Clark showing Nobuko Tsuchiya at SCAI The Bathhouse.⁴ There is no main venue: hop-on, hop-off buses link every venue from Friday to Sunday.⁵ The AWT Bar in Minami-Aoyama is designed by Kae Ito, formerly of SANAA, with cocktails conceived by Mariko Mori, Natsumi Aoyagi and Yoshihiro Suda.⁶
