Why it is worth going

The centre of the show is Leonardo da Vinci's Portrait of a Woman, known as La Belle Ferronnière, painted in oil on walnut around 1490 to 1497; it has never before been exhibited in Japan.¹ Around it the Louvre has lent more than 50 works, arranged in four parts taken from Leonardo's own interests: travel, technical innovation, the study of antiquity and the rise of the portrait.¹ Titian's Portrait of Francis I of France hangs in the portrait section, with Dürer's Rhinoceros, Marcantonio Raimondi's engraving of Raphael's Judgment of Paris, Limoges enamels and a bronze of Charles IX on horseback from the workshop of Germain Pilon elsewhere in the rooms.¹ The galleries stay open until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.¹
