Why it is worth going

Riccardo Muti conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in four programmes at Suntory Hall, the orchestra's week in Japan.¹ The opening evening pairs Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 with Brahms's Symphony No. 2;¹ the second sets Mozart's Symphony No. 40 against Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4;² and the two closing nights each give Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 in the Haas version.³⁴ The Main Hall seats 2,006 around the stage in the vineyard plan Herbert von Karajan helped set, and he called its sound a jewel box.⁵
