Nikkō Tōshō-gū

Why it is on the list

Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa shogun, was moved here from Kunozan in 1617 on his own instruction. The third shogun, Iemitsu, rebuilt the shrine in 1636 into the form it has today.¹ Fifty-five buildings went up in one year and five months, laid out on the natural slope with stairs and approaches, lacquered, painted and carved throughout. They were inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage site in December 1999.² Five of the structures are National Treasures: the Yōmeimon gate with more than 500 carvings, the corridor either side of it with its pierced bird-and-flower panels, the white Karamon, the main sanctuary and the sleeping-cat carving that marks the way to the Okumiya.² The Okumiya is Ieyasu's grave: a worship hall, a cast gate and the tomb itself,² a bronze monument at the top of the stone steps through the cedars.³ The Treasure Museum keeps Ieyasu's own possessions and the offerings of the court, the shoguns and the daimyo.⁴

It is the wrong day for anyone who cannot manage steps: hundreds of stone stairs lead up through the forest to the grave.³ For a quieter day of art and gardens by the sea, take Enoura Observatory instead.

How to get it

From Asakusa, the Tobu limited express Kegon reaches Tobu-Nikko in about 1 hour 50 minutes. From Shinjuku, the JR limited express Nikko takes about two hours. By car, leave the Nikko-Utsunomiya Road at Nikko IC; the shrine is 2 km on. Its car park is open every day, holds 200 cars, needs no reservation and costs JPY 600 for the day, paid on leaving in coins or JPY 1,000 notes.⁵

The shrine opens 9:00 to 17:00 from 1 April to 31 October and 9:00 to 16:00 from 1 November to 31 March, and admission stops 30 minutes before closing. A ticket costs JPY 1,600 for an adult or high-school student and JPY 550 for a younger child, or JPY 2,400 and JPY 870 with the Treasure Museum. It covers the precinct from the Omotemon gate through the Yōmeimon, the Haiden, the Ishi-no-ma, the east corridor with the sleeping cat, the Okumiya and the Honjidō. Festivals and repair work can close parts of it, so ask the shrine office before the visit. An English audio guide to 29 of the buildings is rented just inside the Omotemon for JPY 500 a day, with no booking for individuals; its desk closes an hour before the shrine, at 16:00 from April to October and 15:00 from November to March.⁶

For a private prayer in the Kitōden, itself an Important Cultural Property, call the shrine; an individual prayer starts at JPY 5,000. A group prayer is JPY 2,800 a person, must be booked, takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, and includes a guided explanation of the precinct, a meal of the offerings in the guest hall and free parking.⁷

Discretion

The precinct cannot be taken privately; the quietest way in is a booked prayer in the Kitōden.⁷ The crowds peak on the spring grand festival, 17 and 18 May, and the autumn festival, 16 and 17 October: mounted archery runs on the main approach on the first day, and on the second more than 1,200 people in 53 kinds of costume, armoured warriors among them, carry three portable shrines to the Otabisho and back.⁸ The festival rites themselves are closed to the public, and for the 2026 autumn festival the shrine asked visitors to come by train because of road congestion.⁹ Coaches cannot use the shrine car park on weekends, public holidays or days with special events.⁵
