Why it is on the list

Ordrupgaard's founders, Wilhelm and Henny Hansen, were among the first to buy Vilhelm Hammershøi and L.A. Ring, and the museum holds an unusually deep group of both. The French rooms run from Romanticism and the Barbizon School to Morisot, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Gauguin and Matisse, pastels included, in Snøhetta's 2021 building.1 The same estate holds Zaha Hadid's building and Finn Juhl's own house of 1942, the best-preserved functionalist single-family house in Denmark, still furnished with his Chieftain Chair, Poet Sofa and Judas Table and the art he chose for it.12 A private tour sets the theme to your interest instead of a fixed route.1

It is the wrong choice in the last two weeks of a special exhibition, when that theme is not offered.1 Finn Juhl's House is not reachable by wheelchair, and at weekends it has no guided visits.32 For modern and contemporary art on the coast, take Louisiana for Two instead.

How to get it

Write to booking@ordrupgaard.dk at least 10 days ahead with the date, the language and the theme; the tour runs within the museum's opening hours.1 It costs DKK 1,300 in English or French, DKK 1,100 in Danish, plus admission for every guest.1 Finn Juhl's House is a separate DKK 75 ticket; on weekdays it opens only with a short guided introduction in time slots with few places, so buy that ticket in advance.2 The museum is 10 km north of Copenhagen by Jægersborg Deer Park, with free parking on site.3

Discretion

Ordrupgaard is often busy, and the free open tours have limited places; a private tour keeps the guide to your party.1 A car can drop off and collect in the courtyard in front of the manor house.3
