Why it is on the list

The David Collection holds the largest collection of art from the Islamic world in Scandinavia, from Spain to India and from the 7th to the 19th century.1 It fills the house at Kronprinsessegade 30 where the barrister C.L. David lived, and the Islamic collection has grown into the museum's most important since his death in 1960.2 The rooms are small, so a private tour takes 15 people at most.3

It is the wrong choice for anyone who cannot manage stairs: the museum sits in two listed buildings with many narrow stairs, and wheelchairs and rollators cannot go into the collections.4 It is also wrong for an evening after closing, since private tours run only within opening hours.3 For those, take the private guided tour at the Glyptotek instead.

How to get it

Book through the form on the private tour page, or write to museum@davidmus.dk. The form asks for a date, a preferred start time, the number of people, the language (Danish or English) and the tour: an introduction to the museum, art from the Islamic world, an introduction to older European art, or another theme.3 A tour of 50 to 60 minutes costs DKK 650, 80 to 90 minutes DKK 975, and 110 to 120 minutes DKK 1,300.3 Book as early as possible; requests sent on a weekday are usually answered the same day, and those sent after 16:00 on a Friday, at the weekend or on a holiday the next weekday.3 Cancel at least a week ahead, or the tour is charged in full.3

Tours run only when the museum is open: Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, Wednesday until 21:00, closed on Mondays and on 23, 24, 25 and 31 December.4 Admission itself is free.4

Discretion

The entrance is the first door on the left in the gateway at Kronprinsessegade 30.4 Tours take place during public hours, so other visitors share the rooms; the museum names 10:00 to 13:00 as the quietest time, though school classes may come during the day.4 Photography is allowed without flash or tripod, and large bags go in free lockers in the cloakroom.4
