Why it is worth going

Philip Glass and Robert Wilson began working together after meeting at BAM in 1973, and their opera opened at the Festival d'Avignon in 1976.¹ BAM first staged it in 1984 and brought it back in 1992 and 2012.¹ For the fiftieth year the music is played by the Philip Glass Ensemble, the group that has always performed it, under its longtime music director Michael Riesman.¹ Es Devlin designs an installation for the evening, drawn from Glass's early writings on his music.¹ Three performances only, in the Howard Gilman Opera House, as part of Next Wave 2026.¹²
