A bespoke suit from Gaetano Aloisio

Why it is on the list

Gaetano Aloisio won the Forbici d'Oro, the Golden Scissors, in 1986, and in 2011 the President of the Italian Republic knighted him for his work for Italian style.¹ For more than thirty years he has cut for clients in Rome, Milan, Paris, London and New York.² In his workshop everything is done by hand: artisans he trained himself make every step, and a jacket takes more than 70 hours of handwork from cutting to final assembly.³ Cloth comes from Italian and English mills, among them Holland & Sherry, Scabal, Drapers, Loro Piana, Fintes, Piacenza and Zegna, chosen with the client for the suit in mind.⁴

It is the wrong call for a suit needed this week: the work is measured in hours of hand-sewing and in fittings, not days.³⁵

The atelier is at Via di Porta Pinciana 1 and opens 9.00 to 19.00.⁶ The first meeting can be in Rome or in the client's own city; he sees clients regularly in Paris, London, Monte Carlo, Moscow and New York.⁵

Discretion

Meetings with the Maestro are by appointment, in the atelier or in the client's own city.⁵ The shops are elsewhere, on Via Sistina 67 and Via Francesco Crispi 117.⁷
