The Supreme Class Cabin on the Tokaido Shinkansen

Why it is on the list

From 1 October 2026 JR Central runs a class above the Green Car on selected Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama trains between Tokyo and Hakata.¹ Each cabin is a room of its own with an electronic-lock door that opens with the IC card or QR ticket you boarded with and locks itself behind you.² Car 7 takes up to two guests and has a sofa as well as the seat; Car 10 takes one.²³ A tablet in the cabin sets the recline, leg rest, lumbar support and seat heater, and the lighting, airflow and volume; there is a dedicated Wi-Fi network and a speaker in the headrest that keeps sound to the seat.² A carry-on suitcase up to 55 × 40 × 25 cm fits beside the seat, and there is a large table and a hanger.² Several of the scheduled Nozomi from Tokyo stop at Kyoto.⁴

It runs on only a few trains a day, and on a disrupted day the train may run without the cabins.⁴¹ The seats in the cabins do not turn, and a cabin holds at most two, so a larger party is better in the Green Car.²¹ For a flight out, take the Business Aviation Gate or the escort service at Haneda instead.

How to get it

Book through Smart EX, JR Central's online booking for the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, in the app or the browser; membership is required. Choose Supreme Class under Seat Types, then the train and the car.⁵¹ Sales open at 10:00 one month before the travel date, and a booking covers one person only.¹ For two in Car 7, one books the cabin and the second holds an ordinary, reserved or Green Car ticket for the same train.¹³

On a Nozomi in the regular season, Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is JPY 60,790 for the Car 7 cabin and JPY 42,390 for Car 10, and Tokyo to Nagoya JPY 47,060 and JPY 32,660, fare and express ticket included; JPY 200 less off-peak, JPY 200 more at peak and JPY 400 more at the busiest times.³ Changes are free and as often as needed, up to four minutes before departure and before passing the ticket gate; a refund before departure costs JPY 320.¹ Boarding is by transit IC card or QR ticket only; no paper tickets are issued, and the ticket is void past a station you leave the train at.¹ The trains that carry the cabins are on JR Central's schedule, with same-day service shown from 1 October 2026.³⁴

Discretion

The cabin door locks electronically, opens only with the ticket you boarded with and locks again on its own.² The Supreme Class mark is shown beside the boarding door nearest each cabin.⁵ Sound from the headrest speaker stays at the seat.² A drink and a sweet are brought after boarding, and on the Nozomi and Hikari food and drink sold only to cabin guests can be ordered through the Mobile Order Service.⁶
