Why it is on the list
Sankeien is the garden the businessman Hara Sankei laid out over 175,000 m² at Honmoku, with 17 historic buildings brought from Kyoto, Kamakura and elsewhere; ten are Important Cultural Properties, and in February 2007 the whole garden was designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty.1 The outer garden has been open since 1906; the inner garden was the family's own.1 At its centre stands Rinshunkaku, a Kishu Tokugawa villa of 1649 that Hara bought in 1906 and took until 1917 to move, the reason the garden is compared with Katsura.2
Hakuuntei is the house Hara built in 1920 to live in with his wife: a cypress-bark roof, Kyoto-size mats, and a telephone room and shower set into a house of the old style.3 From the study he looked across to Rinshunkaku and up to the three-storey pagoda, and the inside is normally closed to visitors.3 Hiring it is how a day in the garden ends behind a closed door. It is the wrong choice for anyone who wants Rinshunkaku's painted rooms, which stay closed (only part of it is hired), or more than about 20 at the table.243 For architecture and landscape with the sea below, take Enoura Observatory instead.
How to get it
Write to the foundation that runs the garden at kakusyo@sankeien.or.jp or call +81 45-621-0635 (8:30 to 17:15), naming Hakuuntei and the purpose: the fee depends on whether the use is cultural (a tea gathering, a poetry meeting), general (a meeting, a meal) or commercial.4 The foundation holds the date for a week at no charge; the booking stands once the usage form is in and approved.4 Full- and half-day bookings open 12 months ahead, others two months ahead.4 General use costs JPY 39,700 for four hours on a weekday (JPY 56,700 for 9 to 17) and JPY 79,300 at weekends (JPY 113,300 for the day), paid before the day, and every guest also pays garden entry of JPY 900.45 Cancelling costs 20% from six months out, 50% from two months and the full fee from one month.4
The building is hired only within opening hours, 9 to 17, never on the garden's own event days, and the garden closes from 26 to 31 December.45 Eating is otherwise not allowed in the inner garden, so settle food when you book.5 By car from Tokyo, the Shuto Expressway cannot be left at Sankeien IC in that direction: exit at Honmoku Futo or Shin-Yamashita.6 The car park by the main gate takes no car reservations and cash only, JPY 1,000 for two hours, and fills at plum, cherry and autumn-leaf time; a driver dropping off at the gate is simpler.65
Discretion
The garden stays open to other visitors during a hire, and the foundation refuses a booking that would restrict them.4 Personal photographs are allowed; tripods and selfie sticks are not used in the inner garden, and drones are banned.5 The garden's Grand Tea Gathering on 31 October and 1 November 2026 brings crowds.7
